FIFA 19 rumoured to pick up Serie A license while PES 2019 have deal with Borussia Dortmund terminated early
- Italian news reports claim FIFA 19 will have the Serie A and Coppa Italia licenses
- Konami have announced their four-year deal with Dortmund has been cut short
- Konami have already lost the Champions League and Europa League licenses
PES 2019 has been dealt a massive blow as they fall further and further behind FIFA in terms of player, team and tournament licenses.
FIFA has been outselling PES for years and already hold the licenses for most leagues. Yet, PES had some aces up their sleeves with the Champions League and Barcelona amongst their small collection of rights.
However, after already losing the rights to the Champions League and Europa League rights earlier this year, Konami and PES have had their deal with Borussia Dortmund terminated early. Meanwhile, EA Sports continues to gain more control.
The four-year deal had a couple of years left and meant that Dortmund’s logos, players and stadium were all due to appear in PES 2019 until the Bundesliga club ended the partnership early.
Meanwhile, EA Sports didn’t take long to pounce and take advantage of Konami’s misfortune. Dutch Fox Sports commentator Evert ten Napel accidentally leaked that FIFA 19 will have the Champions League and Europa League licenses.
And now Italian publication Gazzetta della Sport have reported that FIFA 19 will also include the full rights to the Serie A and Coppa Italia. This will be huge for career mode players as the official trophies and more content will exist for the league.
On top of that, it could lead to more Serie A stadiums and better player faces for players from that league. Plus, it could lead to EA releasing more Serie A themed content for Ultimate Team such as Squad Builder Challenges.
Konami have tried to increase their number of licenses with the acquisition of seven minor leagues including the top Portuguese, Russian and Danish leagues. Yet, that pales in comparison to FIFA which will hold the licenses to all five of Europe’s major leagues.
