Though not an advertised feature for the latest patch, today’s update has paved the way for Fortnite gifting. Since the update, a new option has appeared in the account and content menu, allowing players to choose yes or no under the option “can receive gifts from others.” But although that simple fact is exciting enough for many players, we still don’t know exactly what form the feature will take.
While that option has appeared, gifting isn’t a live feature just yet – though Epic says it is indeed on the way. “Gifting will be coming in the future,” community coordinator Sean Hamilton says. “We don’t have an exact date to share, but we will inform you once we do.”
It’s better to give than receive – except when you’re receiving the best free PC games.
That comment comes via Reddit. Any details beyond this remain unclear, and Epic is likely still ironing out the particulars for itself. One possible path is opening up player inventories to freely trade and give away skins, though that would open up avenues for the sorts of third-party stores Valve recently took action against in its trade bot crackdown. Epic would probably want to avoid a similar situation.
More likely, gifting would allow you to buy Battle Passes or direct purchase skins and give them straight to your friends. Of course, there are currently bigger fish for Epic to fry, with the Playground mode currently down for an unspecified amount of time as the developers work through some significant matchmaking issues.
Maybe we’ll see gifting in time for the next major update – that Fortnite Season 5 release date is closing in – but for now you’ll just have to give your friends cash. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it just as much.
