Fortnite Battle Royale took off in September 2017, and it’s already made over $1 billion just from in-game purchases, according to a report.
Revenue growth for Fortnite has grown every month, with a particular spike from February to March.

Fortnite is free to play, but you can purchase V-bucks, used to unlock in-game cosmetics such as new outfits and updated visuals for your glider and pickaxe.
Nothing you can buy gives you a competitive advantage in the game, but Fortnite fans love looking good when competing in the Battle Royale game.
Fortnite’s revenue shot up to $223 million in March, and rose again to $318 million in May, albeit as part of a slower growth. Adding in June’s revenue has taken the game up above $1 billion.
Only a handful of video games have reached $1 billion in sales, although the number is rising sharply in recent years thanks to microtransactions. Grand Theft Auto V was the fastest to do it to date, within three days of its launch in 2013.
Fortnite is now available on most platforms. It was released in September 2017 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and has since had a release on Nintendo Switch and on iOS. An Android version is due for release some time in 2018, possibly sooner rather than later.
Fortnite is part of the battle royale genre, which is currently taking the world by storm. Superdata’s report also says that viewers watched over 700 million hours of people playing battle royale games in May. MOBAs such as Dota 2 and League of Legends clocked in at around 275 million hours watched.
Fortnite Battle Royale is currently the most popular game in the genre, taking over from PUBG earlier this year. The report says Fortnite accounted for 83% of the 700 million hours watched.
Fortnite is a bit more accessible than PUBG, both in the way its played and the fact that Fortnite is free to play, while PUBG costs money up front.
