Fortnite players on PC locked out after Norton antivirus update
- Fortnite players on PC were left unable to play following a recent Norton update
- The Norton antivirus program misidentified a data file as a Trojan horse program
- Trojan horse malware disguises itself and poses a very serious threat to PC users
The new update is thought to have misidentified one of Fortnite’s key files as Trojan horse malware, blocking users from playing the video game.
A recent patch update has been released to give players a workaround for the issue, though some still have had problems trying to log into the game.
A Norton antivirus update left Fortnite players unable to play after misidentifying a data file
Specifically, the Fortnite data file pakchunk0-windowsclient.sig was reportedly incorrectly identified as the Trojan horse malware Trojan.Gen.NPE.2, leading Norton’s antivirus program to block it and leaving many Fortnite players on PC unable to play the popular video game at all.
Fortnite players on PC still unable to play should update Norton manually or use the Norton security menu to restore the quarantined data file and exclude it from any future security scans by the antivirus program.
Notably, uninstalling Norton will not resolve the issue, as it will delete the quarantined file that Fortnite needs to run as well. Any uninstallation attempts of Norton should only be done after Fortnite has been fully restored on the user’s PC.
What is Trojan horse malware?
Trojan horse malware is a form of malicious software that misleads the user of its true intent.
Trojan horse malware is generally spread by disguising itself as something innocuous, such as a social media advertisement or email attachment. Once inadvertently accessed by the user, the Trojan horse malware typically proceeds to steal sensitive user data, such as login credentials and financial information.
