Update, June 25: Fortnite’s Playground mode is coming soon.
Playground mode is finally coming to Fortnite. Playground showed up in the game’s ‘new updates’ section over the weekend. That (probably) means that after weeks of teasing, the new mode will appear as a Limited Time Mode (LTM) in this week’s patch to Epic’s battle royale.
The description in the updates section reads “let your creativity run wild on your own private island.” That’s a bit of a departure from the first iteration of the game’s Playground mode, which would allow players to experience a slower version of battle royale, with a focus on exploration and extra resource gathering, as well as instant respawns.

The suggestion that Playground will take place on a “private” island, however, makes it sound as though things have changed since Epic’s first mention of the mode, back in May. While that initial reveal seemed to suggest there would be plenty of other players on the map, a private island could mean that there’s nobody else on the island, allowing you to explore and practice building, but with no focus on combat.
We’ll find out more later this week, of course, as the new patch brings in new weekly challenges on top of the new mode. Sadly, it sounds like this isn’t a true practice mode – personally, I’d like to see a mode where you have to fight for a win against AI opponents, but that would likely be very difficult to implement.
