HP OMEN has been diving deeper into esports in recent times, with sponsorship of the exceL Esports team as well as big money deal with the Overwatch League.
Mail Esports was invited for an hour with some of the company’s newest hardware, which has been designed with gaming enthusiasts in mind.
However, it’s not all for the hardcore gamer. In fact some items, such as the HP Mixed Reality Headset with controllers can be used on somewhat less powerful hardware, unlike many current VR headsets.
The OMEN 15 laptop is available now, and comes preinstalled with the OMEN Command Center
The MR headset is lightweight, and easy to put on. You strap the halo over your head and the goggles then snap down over your vision, transporting you inside virtual reality. Cameras on the front of the headset keep track of where you are.
I then strapped on the controllers and went for an explore of HoloTour, which allows you to see real world landmarks from the comfort of your own living room in virtual reality.
Moving onto the next VR demo, I strapped on the HTC VIVE Pro. It too has a much easier way of strapping on the headset, and it also has built in headphones to better immerse you in whichever virtual world you’re visiting. In my case, it was the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 4.
But the improved headset wasn’t the showpiece here, it was the OMEN X Desktop VR Backpack. You have a compact desktop PC which slots into a dock, but if you release it from the dock and strap it into the backpack, which comes complete with extra battery packs, you can use the VIVE with none of the pesky wires.
The new optical-mechanical Blue switches on the OMEN Sequencer provide a fast response
Instead, the wires plug straight from the headset into the backpack, allowing you much more freedom of movement. Gone are the days where your VR immersion is broken by tripping over a wire, or even just feeling it dangling next to your legs.
I also got to check out the OMEN Sequencer Keyboard, which features a brand new optical-mechanical Blue switch technology which provides a 0.2 ms response time, which HP OMEN claims is 10x faster than traditional mechanical switches.
The OMEN by HP Reactor mouse was also on show, the most impressive feature of which was the aluminium metal USB cable. It’s sturdy, yet stretchy, ending the days of getting your mouse cable caught behind your monitor or on the edge of your desk.

The HP OMEN 15 laptop is on sale now, and it comes with some excellent features built in. The OMEN Command Center comes preinstalled, which allows you to stream games from your OMEN PC to other Windows 10 devices.
There’s also software which improves the network usage of your device. If you want to keep your online games as lag-free as possible, you can turn off downloads from other sources while you’re playing, even bypassing some of the pesky Windows downloads which can’t normally be paused.
