- ESPN has signed a non-exclusive deal with Riot Games to broadcast the NA LCS
- Coverage on the subscription service will begin with the summer split in June
- Fans will still be able to watch League of Legends on Twitch and YouTube etc.
ESPN has entered a new multi-year agreement with Riot Games to broadcast the North American League of Legends Championship Series on ESPN+.
LoL, one of the most popular esports, will be available via the ESPN app and on ESPN.com. ESPN+ subscribers will be able to watch alongside many other sporting events, original content, and shows.
It’s not an exclusive deal, meaning viewers will still be able to watch via the usual means on Twitch and YouTube.
ESPN has signed a non-exclusive deal with Riot Games to broadcast the NA LCS from summer
In 2016, Riot signed a long term deal with BAMTech for League of Legends worth upwards of $300 million through 2023. Last year, Disney acquired majority control of BAMTech, which has now decided to move League of Legends to the ESPN+ platform alongside other sports, rather than creating a unique one for LoL.
The new deal is another multi-year deal, worth an undisclosed amount of money.
ESPN+ costs $5 a month, and covers every major sport. It also provides a video-on-demand library, and ad-free videos. However, since Twitch and YouTube are free to watch, it remains to be seen how many esports fans will make the switch.
We’re currently in the mid-season break for League of Legends. The NA LCS spring split ended in April with Team Liquid winning the first place prize.
They went on to the Mid-Season Invitational international tournament, which was held in Europe earlier this month.
The summer split for the NA LCS kicks off on June 16, culminating in the finals from September 8-9.
The terms of the deal don’t cover whether ESPN+’s coverage will extend to the World Championships later in the year.
