Pro Evolution Soccer has held the rights to the UEFA Champions League for the past 10 years. However, Konami recently revealed their partnership is ending.
It appears that competitor EA Sports has snapped up the licence, meaning that the Champions League will finally be in FIFA 19. The days of the ‘Champions Cup’ are no more.
The leak comes from Dutch Fox Sports commentator Evert ten Napel, who said on television that the Europa League and Champions League will be in the next iteration of the game.
Pro Evolution Soccer’s loss is FIFA’s gain as the Champions League rights might swap hands
A translation of what Evert ten Napel said is provided by a member of ResetEra:
‘For about six or seven days a year, I record updated lines [for the game] in the studio in Utrecht with Youri Mulder [another commentator]. In 2019 as well, the game will get even better, because they’ve added the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
‘I’m almost finished with the 2019 version, which will then go to the test center. [In the test center] some very good players will check everything and after that, it will go to the stores in October. And then all those weirdos will be standing in line again at midnight.’
The conversation was captured and uploaded to YouTube.
This news will probably mean that EA Sports will be giving the full makeover treatment to Europe’s top club competition, in the same way they’ve done with several of the world’s top leagues.
Expect official branding and presentation packages, along the same lines as the planned visuals for the upcoming free World Cup mode.
EA has not officially commented yet on this leak, but we will update you when they do.
