Lionel Messi receives FIFA 18 World Cup upgrade but is still rated lower than Cristiano Ronaldo
- Messi was the hero as he pulled Argentina out of their rut and into the knockouts
- As a result EA Sports have bumped Messi up to 95 in the FIFA 18 World Cup mode
- There were also upgrades to his teammate Marcus Rojo and Peru’s Andre Carrillo
It was a close call for Argentina last night but an inspired performance from Lionel Messi and co helped drag Argentina out of their World Cup rut and into the knockout stages where they will face France.
The introduction of Arsenal-target Ever Banega into the line-up played a huge part in their success but he was overlooked by EA Sports for FIFA 18 upgrades, which instead went to goalscorers Messi and Marcus Rojo.
Messi is now rated an impressive 95-overall in the World Cup mode but he’s still trailing behind cover-star Cristiano Ronaldo.

While he is still one rating behind the Portuguese forward, Messi’s card is still phenomenal – not that that’s surprising. With 90 pace, 97 dribbling, 92 shooting and 89 passing.
Meanwhile Rojo was boosted to an 84 overall after his weak-foot volley gave Argentina a late winner. Despite that goal, the centre-back only has a two-star weak-foot and 55 volleys but his defensive stats are good. With 84 defending, 83 physicality and even 72 pace, he could be a good option.
Another fun option amongst the latest upgrades is Peruvian winger Andre Carrillo. The Benfica man scored a stunning volley to give Peru their first goal of the tournament, much to the delight of his nation.
His new 83-rated card could be a bit of a hidden gem with 87 pace and 86 dribbling as well as four-star skills and weak-foot. While he probably won’t fit into your starting team because of chemistry, he could be a nice option from the bench.
