It’s going to be an incredible moment when London Spitfire and Philadelphia Fusion walk out into the Barclays Center for the first time. The Overwatch League grand final could go down as a historic moment for the esports industry.
The OWL attracted big names from the start but with the game’s unproven history in hosting esports tournaments, many were skeptical. However, the inaugural season has exceeded expectations and wowed fans across the globe.
Two men who have helped bring the entertainment are hosts Malik Forte and Alex ‘Goldenboy’ Mendez. We caught with them for a lighthearted interview ahead of the finals in Brooklyn.

Both have a a storied history in the video game industry – Malik was a video games journalist who was the editor for Nerdist while Goldeboy has commentated multiple esports titles including Call of Duty, Halo and Rocket League.
The two of them have been long term friends and admitted that the chance to work together influenced their decisions to join Blizzard. When asked what their favourite quality of the other was, Malik joked: ‘I have no favourite thing about this guy, he’s a clown!
‘No, Goldenboy is the hardest working dude in esports, his work ethic is hard to overlook, it’s very inspiring. I feel like having this dude as part of my life has always driven me to take things a step further.’
Goldenboy added that he has a mutual respect for his colleague’s work rate: ‘As Malik said, I’ve known him for years and I’ve seen him start from scratch and just grind his way through.

‘We came from less than stellar upbringings so we understood the grind, we understood what was necessary. Malik personifies that to a tee.’
And when it came down to predictions, they were both on the same page as to who will come out victorious: ‘Philadelphia are going to win, it’s a free final.’ exclaimed Malik.
‘This meta just plays into their style too well, I think they will just dominate. I honestly believe they could win the match without Eqo and ShaDowburn, that’s just how good they are.
‘London is great, they peaked at the right time. I don’t think they’re necessarily going to lay down during this match but I just think that Philadelphia is too versatile and this is a meta where versatility is too important.’
Goldenboy agreed but believes it will still be a thrilling battle to watch: ‘What makes this final very exciting for a lot of fans, in other games you can look at it and think without a doubt, this team is gonna win. You already know one team had an easier path and the other team is dominant.
‘Personally for this final, I don’t feel that way. Honestly my prediction was NY Excelsior and LA Valiant in the finals. That’s what I was expecting, so because it ended the way it did and based on previous results – the way Philly took down NY means I have to give to give the nod to Fusion because NY were the best team in the league.’
