Overwatch is known for its highly diverse cast of characters, but the newest one, Hammond, is easily the cutest.
He’s an oversized, highly intelligent hamster who pilots a huge wrecking ball mech, able to wreak havoc in the ranks of the enemy. But look at his little face!
Overwatch character tech artists Dylan Jones and Hak Lee have shown off ‘Hammond’s rig,’ a special animation tool they use to create all of Hammond’s animations.
Hammond is undoubtedly Overwatch’s cutest character, and it’s all to do with the animation
The video, titled ‘Inside Overwatch: The Art of Wrecking Ball,’ shows off the controls of the tool, which was created to allow the animators to interact with the character model.
They can play around with just about every section of Hammond, from his little tail, to his pudgy belly, to his mouth and even his tongue.
The face is the most complex structure on the character, and the tool is a simply way for the animators to bring life to Overwatch’s newest hero.
Not only can the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth be interacted with, even small areas of his cheeks and under his eyes are movable. ‘Cute mouth and tongue controls are very important too!’ says the caption on the video.
When Hammond was first introduced in a teaser video, fans were treated to him popping out of the mech and having a little look around while doing the cutest laugh ever.
Hammond is due for release today after a period of time on the PTR. You can expect him to drop onto the scene at around 6pm BST.
If you want to get ahead of the game and find out how to play him straight off the bat, we’ve got some top tips from Overwatch’s lead designer Geoff Goodman for you.
Also, we’ve got all of Hammond skins, emotes, victory poses, highlight intros and sprays for you to check out, so you know exactly which ones you want to get when you head to his Hero Gallery screen later.
If you haven’t played Overwatch, and Hammond is getting you in the mood, there’ll be a free weekend coming up to coincide with the Overwatch League finals, so that’ll be a perfect time to try it out.
